What’s New?

June 8th, 2010.  Thank you so much to those of you who came down to our send-off party for Otto on Saturday morning.  Please check out our Facebook fan page for some photos from the event!  We are so lucky to have such a fantastic community of members supporting us with good wishes and delicious treats!  Otto will certainly be well fed for the 5-day journey up to the fishing grounds.  And speaking of which, Otto had a very positive follow-up appointment with his surgeon this morning giving him the go-ahead to put full weight on his recovering leg and to leave tomorrow morning for the fishing grounds.  And so Otto and some other local fisherman will be heading out together at 5am on Wednesday June 9th travelling up to Prince Rupert.  Otto, Shaun, and Lavonne are now loading up the boat with food and supplies for the trip, and running some last errands.  The first opening Otto is planning to fish will be a Nass River run on June 15th.

May 29, 2010.  Otto is recovering well from his hip fracture last month.  We’re expecting his doctor to give him the OK at his follow-up appointment next week to head up fishing for the first Nass River opening June 15th.  Meanwhile, we hope you’ll join us for our Send-Off Party Saturday June 5th!  We’ll be on the boat on the fish sales dock at the False Creek Fisherman’s Wharf from 10am-noon.  We’ll have coffee and tea and some home baking and we invite you to bring a little something to share.  Please drop us an email if you are planning to come to help give us an idea of how much food and drink to prepare.

April 28, 2010.  Otto pulled the boat out of the water for a big paint job. While working on it this morning, Otto had a fall and suffered a minor hip fracture. We are awaiting surgery, but Otto’s a tough ol fisherman and the doctor says he’ll be up and about in a few days and ready for the start of the fishing season.  We’ll keep you all posted on his recovery!

April 18, 2010.  This week, we welcomed our 82nd member and realized that we were likely to surpass our initial limit of 100 shares.  We have been speaking with two of Otto’s long time fishing partners about the possibility of having them join our CSF ever since we began the CSF in 2009.  When we reach our 100th member, we will officially welcome aboard another fisherman!

March 4, 2010.  We are pleased to be featured in a Georgia Straight article today!  Otto just spent a week on the boat assessing what major work will need to be done before he heads out fishing.  He painted the interior of the cabin, did some work on the head, and has begun to research exterior paints for a full exterior cabin and hull paint job to be done in April.  We are looking at buying a spring salmon net.  It’s an entirely different kind of fishing from the sockeye, chum, and pink fishing we normally do, but we think it might be worth the work to bring another species of salmon to our members.  We’ll keep you posted!

January 6, 2010.  Happy New Year!  We’ve had a busy fall and winter so far.  We attended Slow Food Vancouver’s Terra Madre event and were very well received.  Welcome aboard to all our new members who joined up at or after the event!  We were also just interviewed by Edible Vancouver Magazine so look for us in the Editor’s Picks of the spring issue!  We are off to a great start for 2010 memberships and are hoping to double our 2009 membership.  Any member who signs up a new member will receive a free fish so be sure to let us know if you referred someone!  Otto is planning to paint the whole boat this year, above and below the water line.  The work will probably begin in March.  Meanwhile, we still have a bit of smoked, vaccum-sealed salmon available so drop us an email if you are interested!

September 8,  We are selling our remaining fish at the Burnaby and Gastown Farmer’s Markets.  If you are a member, you are always welcome to come to these Markets to pick up your share or to purchase extra product at your member’s rate.  If you join now for next year, you can buy fish this year at member’s rate!  And don’t forget, our final CSF members official pick-up date is Sept 19th at the boat.  Hope to see you soon!

Auguust 8,2009

We are now finished fishing for the summer.  Our members will have more opportunities to pick up frozen fish, fillets, and smoked salmon products in the coming weeks.  We are hoping to get permission to have a b-b-q at the docks next Saturday.     It was not the season we had hoped for BUT our CSF members made it possible for us to make ends meet! Thank you all.

August 3, 2009

Area 3, Nass River is now closed for the season.

Although the Skeena River Sockeye run has been determined to be healthy this year, the DFO has decided that there is not enough surplus for a commercial fishery.  There are chums-a-plenty on the mid-coast we are told…so down the coast to areas 7 & 8 we go.

Fishing opens in area 7 for 24hrs on August 4.  Good Luck to Skippers Otto (Eldorado our boat) and Terry (Island Bounty our partner) .

Keep watching this space for additional updates!
